What physicists wished for, more than anything else, was "The Theory of Everything", including quantum gravity. The Unified Field Theory is the holy grail of physics. Einstein tried his hands on this one but failed. During the last one hundred years, human knowledge has expanded exponentially and, sometime in the next millennium, we may very well understand the true nature of the universe. This aspect of physics I still in its infancy but we are definitely making progress.
Interstellar travel: This may involve wishful thinking because interstellar travel would either require millennia or it would have to be based on some form of time-travel. However, time-travel is impossible, in accordance with our current knowledge of the nature of the universe. Time travel or interstellar travel would, therefore, require a complete revision of theoretical physics beyond Einstein and Planck. Interstellar travel is unlikely within the next one hundred years but not impossible within the next millen..
